Data, the new black gold that won’t run out

“Data is the new oil”-this is an expression we have all heard at least once in recent years. It was coined by British mathematician Clive Humby in 2006. Over the past 15 years, accelerating digital transformation has led to exponential growth in the amount of data and information available. We are surrounded by Big Data, Open Data and the cloud. In most cases, this is data generated by devices such as smartphones, voice assistants, or Gps. Such proliferation has given rise to a data science focused on data collection and critical analysis of the results. The ability of this activity to make connections between research and industry has made the figure of the data scientist one of the most coveted professions of this century.

  • To be a successful business in the 21st century, you need to use data to your advantage(Digital4.biz);
  • The 5 most relevant data trends in 2022(Forbes).

Although the term has been widely understood and used since it was coined, data is still an emerging discipline that is rapidly growing and changing. According to data from Glassdoor, in the United States, data scientist is among the top three positions in demand in job rankings(Towards Data Science). But how does one become a data expert? Although Stem pathways provide a solid foundation for embarking on this career path, the reality is more complex and these skills alone are not enough. One bridge between universities and business, writes Morning Future, is highly specialized vocational training academies.
